OUR STORY
Mothering was born from personal experience. As a mother of two, I was thrown into the turbulent world of motherhood from the moment I birthed my first child in 2023 on our loungeroom floor after a 42 hour labour. Despite having a beautiful partner and a circle of supportive friends and family around me, I was wracked with postpartum anxiety, and I felt completely out of my depth and profoundly alone in my experience, unprepared for the life-changing role that becoming a mother truly is. It was jarring, it was terrifying, and it was the beginning of a realisation that most of us have been failed by the same silence and left to figure it out ourselves.
Desperate to understand what was happening to me, I slowly found scientists, health professionals and other mothers speaking about the monumental transition that matrescence really is. The more I found, the more validated I felt about what was happening to me. I couldn’t believe I had never heard of it – not once, not from a single health professional I came in contact with throughout two postpartum experiences.
I was baffled as to why women are not provided adequate information on how our bodies change in matrescence. Our brains completely reorganise. Hormones become a new cocktail. We are nutritionally depleted. This list goes on.
In pregnancy there are countless resources teaching us how our bodies soften, our organs rearrange, and weekly updates on when our babies grow fingernails or learn to decipher voices. But information on how a mother’s brain goes through a complete metamorphosis once we have our babies in our arms? Crickets.
It is not good enough. Mothering is my commitment to making sure that changes now.
Through honest storytelling, access to evidenced based neurobiological and physiological information, practical tools and resources, I truly believe the landscape for mothers can shift.
The podcast is just the beginning, so much more is coming.
